Toy Soldiers was a semester long exploration in Spring 2009 while I was a design student at Lund University in Sweden.

In summer 2008 I went to visit some relatives in New Jersey. My cousin had just been given some green army men toys- small green injection molded figurines that stand about 5cm tall. He had been playing with them in the yard and they camouflaged perfectly with the grass. He left them in the yard before moving on to play with his next toy. When I walked outside barefoot later, I heard a crunch and felt a sharp pain run up my leg. I had stepped on one of these plastic soldiers who laid fallen in the yard. Once the initial frustration had passed, an idea sparked in my mind. I began to think about how often children discard toys, not just in the yard, but they forget toys and outgrow them.

Shocked at the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on soldiers returning home from war, as well as my father's struggle with depression after years of serving as a police officer, I aimed to create something to visually represent the degradation that can occur in one's mind after witnessing horrific events. Although this is a subject rarely spoken about, there has been an increase in diagnoses within the last decade of PTSD within the military community. There is a striking resemblance to children's treatment of these toys inspired by violence, and society's treatment of returning veterans.

The finished project is an unfired clay model of a soldier. Over time, the sculpture degrades. It is meant to be subtle in its expression, and hopefully will spark one discussion of this unfortunate phenomenon.

Every year, the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Georgia Tech produces a magazine to update alumni, faculty, and students about research that is going on within the school. Due to budget constraints in 2009, the magazine was not produced. In 2010, the magazine debuted again with more pieces and longer articles.

We wanted to showcase the work of faculty and students as best as possible, and the strong use of photography is evident throughout the publication. The magazine was produced for both print and web viewing.
This project was produced while I was the graphic designer at CEE. Alongside Ruth Gregory, I created the entire layout and contributed photography for the publication.

The Ignite Lamp is an interactive lamp that reacts to the world around it.

As humans, we naturally take from the world around us. There's an adage that says simply 'we are the product of everyone we've ever met'. As you go throughout your day and carry the Ignite Lamp, it collects evergy from the sun as you collect thoughts and ideas from your surroundings. In the evening, as you converse with friends, the lamp comes alive. It reacts to the level of noise from speech, and gets brighter as the conversation gets louder.

Imagine the life of a dinosaur. One day, you're peacefully enjoying a meal of some grass along the banks of a savanna. All of a sudden, you hear footsteps in the grass and feel a sharp pain run along your spine as a Tyrannosaurus Rex bites his teeth into your scaly skin.

This is the moment I tried to capture for these salt and pepper shakers. This project was created as a form exercise for my sophomore Industrial Design studio at Georgia Tech.
